Refugio Bobcats Ready for 2A Division I State Semifinal

REFUGIO- On a Mission to capture their sixth state title, the Refugio Bobcats have been on a tear through the 2022 Texas High School Football Season. At 13-1, Refugio has been exceptional during the 2A Division I State Playoffs. The Bobcats are slated to take on the Timpson Bears in the UIL Class 2A Division I State Semifinal.

‘’I am extremely proud of our Kids and Coaches for being Regional Champions, but the work is not done”, said Refugio Head Coach Jason Herring. “We are still one game away from even getting the opportunity to reach our goal for the season”.

The Timpson Bears currently are one of the few remaining unbeaten teams in the State. “Timpson is absolutely loaded with talent and speed. We will have to play one of our best games of the year to have a chance”, said Herring. “We are an extremely young team that I believe is ahead of schedule”.

The Bobcats this week have been doubling down in practice. Coach Herring chimed in on what the key focuses have been in practice. ‘’Execution on offense, taking care of the football, and tackling on defense’’, said Herring. “Special Teams are also critical in big games, so we had really worked hard on them in that aspect”.

While having an exceptional record in what’s been a tough postseason, there has definitely been some lessons learned in the playoffs. “We learned what I already knew, that it is not fun to play someone twice”, said Herring. “We had to play district rivals Ganado and Shiner twice this season, and it is always very challenging the second time around”.

This season has also shown who the leaders have been for Refugio. ‘’Jordan King and Eziyah Bland are both right at the 1,000 rushing yards mark for the season”, said Herring. “Our Sophomore Quarterback Kelan Brown has thrown for 2,500 yards. Our Wide Receivers Ernest Campbell, Isaiah Avery, and Chai Whitmire have combined for 1,800 receiving yards”. But it’s not only the offense who has been on fire. The Bobcat Defense has certainly stepped up big to contribute to Refugio’s dominance this season. “On Defense, Kaleb Brown, Isaiah Avery, Braylon Gonzales, Chai Whitmire and Jaedyn Lewis have been our leaders”.

The Bobcats have won five State Titles with the last one being in 2019. Refugio has made 10 State Title game Appearances. Refugio and Timpson will meet on Thursday at Cypress’ Cy-Fair FCU Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00pm.
