Doubleheader at Brownsville Veterans Results in two Great Finishes

BROWNSVILLE- Tuesday Night we kicked off another night of Hoops with a Doubleheader at Brownsville Veterans where the Lady Chargers hosted The Harlingen South Lady Hawks in a non-district matchup. Following that matchup we had the Raymondville Bearkats come to town to take on the Brownsville Veterans Chargers. 

Harlingen South quickly got things started and jumped to an early lead as The Lady Hawks took control from the get-go to put up 13 points as Alexis Rocha led the scoring with five points. Countering the Lady Hawks attack was Brownsville Vets’ Mariana Espinosa and Caty Esquivel who put up a combined eight points to make it South 13 to 8 over Brownsville Veterans

The Second Quarter continued with the same dominant play on both sides of the ball for Harlingen South as the Lady as Alexis Rocha, Katy Machen, and Sarahi Rodriguez combined for 22 points at the end of the First Half.  Caty Esquivel, Mariana Espinosa combined for 13 points. Jordyn Rivera, Alexa Torres, and Annie Cisneros also contributed to the scoring.

During the Third Quarter, Brownsville Veterans quickly changed the pace and displayed offensive dominance and defensive pressure over Harlingen South. Esquivel had a stellar third quarter with 9 points to give her a total of 15 points in the game, Espinosa entered the double digits in scoring with 4 points in the third to give her 11 points in the ball game. For the first time in the game, The Lady Chargers led Harlingen South 37-32, a five-point difference that was common in the scoring difference for the majority of the game. Brownsville Vets would control the fourth quarter and go on to win 47 to 38 over Harlingen South, Esquivel won player of the game with a stat line of 17 points and nine steals.

30 minutes later, The Raymondville Bearkats tipped off against Brownsville Veterans. Early on, Raymondville exploded out of the gates as Jayson Cantu and Jayden Garcia combined for 16 points. Joshua Valdez also tacked on a three-pointer from deep in the corner. The Castaneda’s from Brownsville Vets, who are known to put up high points in games, were quickly suppressed defensively by Raymondville, Rodrigo, and Gerry Castaneda combined for five points in the first quarter. Raymondville led 19-11 at the end of one.

Cantu quickly put himself on the verge of a double-double as he finished the first quarter with nine points and 10 rebounds. Two minutes into the second quarter, he achieved it as he continued his dominant run to finish the first half with 18 points, 12 rebounds. The lone scorer in the second quarter for Raymondville. For Brownsville Vets, Pablo Castaneda entered the mix and netted eight points in the second quarter to combine with Rodrigo and Gerry for a total of 17 points. Kenny Davis, Alex Ocampo, and Campy Rodriguez finished the first half with 6 points combined. Raymondville still led 28-24 at the half.

The Second half continued with Raymondville’s dominant run. Valdez led the scoring for the Bearkats in the third with five points. Andres Cisneros, Gerry and Rodrigo Castaneda, and Kenny Davis, combined for 11 points. The pace through the second half was slow on offense, but extremely fast-paced on defense as there was a total of 11 rebounds and seven turnovers between the two teams. The Fourth Quarter saw Brownsville Veterans take the lead as Davis and Castaneda led the scoring in the fourth for the Chargers. Valdez and Cantu maintained control and quickly regained the lead to win it 51 to 50.

Jayson Cantu won player of the game, finishing with 23 points, 16 rebounds, and 6 steals. Other leading scorers were Jayden Garcia who finished with 10 points and 2 steals, and Joshua Valdez with 13 points and four rebounds. Leading scorers for the Chargers were Gerry Castaneda, who finished with 11 points, 4 steals, and Pablo Castaneda, who finished with 10 points.
