Cinderellas: Harlan & Hallettsville

The Region 4 Volleyball Tournament will conclude this weekend. Semi-finals will be played on Friday and the Finals on Saturday to qualify for the State Tournament.

4 teams left per the 6 classifications means 24 squads in Region 4 are still in the hunt for a state championship. Two of those 24 teams finished third in their respective districts. Yet they find themselves among the elite volleyball squads of the state. These teams are Harlan in 6A and Hallettsville in 3A.

Harlan finished 3rd in District 29-6A with O’Connor 1st, Warren 2nd, and Stevens taking 4th to qualify for the playoffs. Harlan has cruised to the Regional Semi without dropping a single set. The Lady Hawks eliminated Laredo Alexander, PSJA and District 29 runner-up Warren. O’Connor is also still alive in the playoffs, but has had tougher matches. The Lady Panthers beat Edinburg Vela and Brownsville Rivera both 3-1 and survived Laredo United 3-2.

If O’Connor wins against Vandegrift and Harlan beats Brandeis, it will set up an all-29-6A final. This will be a tall order. Brandeis is ranked 1st in the state with a 43-2 record. Vandegrift is ranked 6th with a 38-9 record. But Harlan has shown this post season that once the ball goes up you can throw out the record books.

Hallettsville has also defied the odds to be the other last remaining 3rd seed to still be alive in Region 4 volleyball playoffs. District 28-3A was also represented by district champion Columbus, runner-up Vanderbilt Industrial, and 4th seed Yoakam.

Much like in 6A, Columbus is also still alive in the tournament. The Lady Cardinals had to overcome Poteet, Lago Vista, and surviving 3-2 to Poth. The Lady Brahmas also had a 3-2 test against Randolph. But were able to cruise past Jourdanton and Blanco in straight sets. Goliad will take on Hallettsville and Columbus will take on London in the Regional Semi-Finals.

Good Luck to all the Volleyball teams still fortunate enough to play this weekend.
