Koenig providing Calallen as utility weapon

AUSTIN — For Calallen, they are back where they expected to be as Austin has become the expectation for their seniors, who have felt the atmosphere that is the state tournament once before.

It helps that the team has depth at every position and in the middle of it all is senior Kennedy Koenig, who has proved to be a utility weapon for coach Teresa Lentz.

The word ‘selfless’ was the one word used to describe Koenig. It’s not surprising since Koenig stepped in and played four different positions for the Lady Wildcats due to roster injuries.

“Kennedy, anything and everything we need her to be, she will do,” Lentz said. “She does it and does it without complaining and does it with a great attitude. She knows it is what the team needs and is always working hard.”

Koenig, who is a four-year letterman, has played left and right field, catcher and first base.

Fueling her go-getter attitude and willingness to step in is not only her long-running passion for the game as she grew up a softball player. Instead, it is a greater cause that is near and dear to the Calallen senior.

Prior to Koenig getting to high school, her grandfather Alfred Koenig passed away.

With her grandfather’s passing, it was not easy for her to play the game she loved without him in her corner.

“It was really hard on me,” Kennedy said. “Not having him in the stands and watching me play in high school was hard. So I play for him and I know he is proud of me and he is always watching down on me. I play for him.”

With her utility skills, Koenig has helped Calallen to their second trip to the state tournament. This time around, Calallen has the experience and are brimming with confidence as they prepare to take on Iowa Park with a trip to the state title game on the line.

“I’m not nervous,” Koenig said. “We are all ready to go up there, from our last trip to now, we have confidence we have been there before and we know what it takes. We are ready.”
