Calallen set to face Liberty for the class 4A title

AUSTIN — In 2019, the Calallen Lady Wildcats became the first softball program from the Coastal Bend to reach the state tournament, where they would go on to defeat The Colony and eventually fall to Angleton in the state title game.
Fast forward two years later and the Lady Wildcats are once again getting a shot at history when they face Liberty for the Class 4A state championship at Red and Charline McCombs Field on the University of Texas campus this morning.

Here are some things to watch.

Liberty, who won the title in 2018 3-1 over Vernon, will rely on senior pitcher Kaci West, who was named MVP of the state tournament in 2018. In the title game, West threw a complete game, walking two, gave up one run on four hits and fanned 11.

West is a Baylor commit and will be looking for her second state championship.

Along with West, second baseman Jaylen Prichard and third baseman Mikaelah Burkland, who were also named to the All-Tournament team in 2018, also return to the lineup.

Heading into Austin, West boasts a .434 average and is 26-4 in the circle. Prichard is slashing .497 while Burkland is hitting .381.

Calallen will look to continue their aggressive approach at the plate. Against Iowa Park, the Lady Cats cranked three homers from Megan Guyer, Lauren Mata and Jasmine Pena.

The Lady Wildcats will turn to either Breanna Ford or Raegan Tennill in the circle.
