AUSTIN – After a dramatic Game 3 win over rival Santa Gertrudis in the Region IV-3A final, Bishop will look to keep its story book season going by slaying another dragon.

The Bishop Lady Badgers will meet the Rains Wildcats this morning at 10 a.m. in the class 3A state semi-finals at Red and Charline McCombs Field in Austin.

While this is the Lady Badgers’ first state tournament appearance, the Lady Cats are back for their third trip to Austin, including a trip in 2018 that concluded with a loss to eventual 3A champion SGA.

A year later, however, Rains would win its first state title.

During the Lady Cats’ postseason run, they are averaging nine runs a contest and have scored double digits four times.

The semifinal matchup with Bishop and Rains will feature a battle of the aces.

Bishop pitcher Andrea Martinez delivers a pitch during Game 1 of their best-of-three Region IV-3A series against Santa Gertrudis Academy last Thursday at Corpus Christi ISD’s Cabaniss Field (Mark Molina / RSL)

Rains senior Sage Hoover enters the state tournament with a 22-0 record with an arsenal that includes a fastball, curve, screw, rise curve and a deadly back door curve.

The hard throwing right stands at a solid 5’8 and tops out at 62 MPH  on the radar gun.

In the circle, Rains has dominated with pitching four shutouts and three times have allowed just one run.

For Bishop, it will be junior Andrea Martinez who holds a record of 21-0 and has over 80 strikeouts in 10 playoff games this season.

For Martinez, she brings plenty of spin on the ball with a great change up, rise ball, screw, drop curve and hits 60 MPH.

Bishop’s offense is averaging nine runs per game and in the circle, the Lady Badgers have six shutouts and twice have allowed just one run between Martinez and Hannah Griffith.
