MISSION – Sharyland High Rattlers defeated their crosstown rival Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks 11-3 to tie up the season series Tuesday night.

After putting up zero runs on the scoreboard at the previous outing on the Diamondback’s home turf, the Rattlers were able to respond with an assertive performance, led by senior right-handed pitcher Kiké Cienfuegos, who struck out six batters, while allowing nine scattered hits throughout six innings.

“I told my coach I was ready since Yesterday,” Cienfuegos said. “I told him we were going to win because I really want this one.”

The Rattlers and Diamondbacks are now tied for the No. 2 seed in District 31-5A and are one-game back of McAllen High.

Sharyland High can threaten McHi’s potential district title as they face off this Friday, setting up the possibility of a three-way tie for No. 1 seed in 31-5A.

With the Diamondbacks trailing by two runs in the bottom of the fifth, Sharyland High Sophomore Cole Gerlach delivered a heavy blow when he hit a shot for a three-run double to put Rattlers up ahead 8-3.

Sharyland High managed to pick up three more runs during the sixth inning on RBIs from Victor Sanchez, Jose Acosta, and Diego Zuniga to paint the final score 11-3.

Sharyland’s Cole Gerlach led his team with a 2-for-4 game with three RBI, while Sharyland Pioneer was led by Angel Larranga, who finished with two RBI on a 2-for-4 night at the plate.

The Bulldogs and Rattlers game is set for the first pitch at 7 p.m. at Mcallen High School. The Rattlers will follow that matchup with their last regular season game against PSJA Memorial at noon on Saturday.

The Diamondbacks will close out their season with a 7 p.m. contest against PSJA Memorial on Friday and a noon game against Mcallen Memorial on Saturday.
