Lots of Coastal Bend and Rio Grande Valley schools came out ranked in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches rankings Monday.
On the boys’ side, the Coastal Bend landed five teams in the standings.
At the 3A level, the London Pirates rank the highest among ranked area teams at No. 4. In 4A, Corpus Christi Miller ranked No. 15 with Tuloso-Midway not far behind at No. 21. The Miller Buccaneers square off in a much-anticipated non-district bout on Monday, February 8 at Miller High School.
The Valley tabbed two teams in the boys TABC rankings with Santa Rosa at No. 17 in 3A and Santa Maria No. 24 in 2A. San Perlita wrapped up the ranked-boys teams at No. 9 in 1A. The Trojans upset ranked McMullen County in late January.
On the girls’ side, 12 squads found their name in the poll.
The highest-ranked girls team came out at No. 6 with the Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Lady Eagles, who sit at 21-2 on the year. The Lady Eagles have two tough contests left at Flour Bluff and home against Victoria West.
Valley 6A powerhouses Harlingen and Edinburg found themselves at No. 16 and No. 22. The Lady Bobcats fell to district foe PSJA but still control the league and have already sealed another district title. Harlingen Lady Cardinals head coach Ashley Moncivaiz collected her 200th career win in her seventh season at Harlingen.
Laredo United South came out at No. 25, wrapping up the the 6A standings.
In 5A, the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers played potentially their final home game of the year (pending playoffs) and secured the 32-5A district championship with their win over Brownsville Pace 56-30. The Lady Chargers held their own in the middle of the pack at No. 16.
The Sharyland Pioneer Lady Diamondbacks also continued their win streak, topping McAllen Memorial last night 46-39, moving them closer to clinching a district title.
Back in the Coastal Bend, three 4A squads were ranked in No. 16 Robstown, No. 22 Rockport Fulton, and No. 23 Beeville Jones.
In the 3A standings, No. 15 Santa Gertrudis, No. 19 Lyford and No. 25 Skidmore-Tynan wrapped up the area schools in the TABC rankings, which were released Monday.
