Los Fresnos’s Gerry Martinez passes 1,000-point milestone

by Kevin Narro | LFN

LOS FRESNOS – On Tuesday, January 26, young sophomore Gerry Martinez wrote another chapter in what has already been a brilliant career.

Despite the loss against Weslaco, Martinez became the fourth player in Los Fresnos head coach Marco Hinojosa’s tenure to score 1,000 career points.

Martinez would finish with 22 points in the home loss against the Panthers.

“It is a blessing,” Martinez said on reaching to the milestone. “It didn’t go the way we wanted to. We didn’t win the game, but it was a surreal moment for me for sure. I have played with some great guys in the past, and this year, they have helped set me up for success.”

Martinez joins the ranks of former Falcon greats: Andrew Carrizales, who leads the way with 1,348 points, Jordan Urbina with 1,314 points, Hugo De La Cruz with 1,343 points and now, Martinez.

“My 1,000th point was a free throw in the third quarter,” Martinez said. “I wasn’t keeping track but after I made the free throw I thought back in my head and counted and realized I had done it. Just to be up their with those names is special and if there is a scoring record I’m going to try and beat it, I’m not sure what it is but I will try and beat it.”

What stands out is Urbina and Carrzales did it in four years and De La Cruz did it in three years. Martinez has done it through a season and a half.

“As good as Gerry is, we still think there is so much room to get better,” said Hinojosa. “His goal this offseason will be to put muscle so he can take the beating on a nightly basis so he can finish better at the rim.”

With the one-year anniversary of the sudden death of former Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant, Martinez tries to emulate that Mamba Mentality on the court.

“I wore his shoes against Weslaco in honor of Kobe,” Martinez said. “When it comes to a role, it’s that Mamba Mentality. I try to have that mentality.”

Martinez and the Falcons remain in the hunt for a seventh straight district title and hit the road to face the Harlingen Cardinals tonight. Catch the game on Rio Sports Live!
