Edinburg Vela senior guard Andrea Molina netted 17 points in the Lady Sabercats’ 57-38 win over La Joya High on Wednesday, January 21. Molina also reached a basketball milestone by reaching 1,000 points in her high school career.

“It had always been a goal of mine since my freshman year,” Molina said. “I’ve worked so hard, about 1,000 shots a day, my teammates… It’s a lot of hard work.”

Molina is the fourth Sabercat to reach 1,000 points in the program and was honored Friday, January 23, with a banner following the Lady Sabercats’ win over La Joya Juarez-Lincoln. Vela routed the Lady Huskies 95-48.

The milestone comes as special as it would with dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, which Rio Grande Valley players are force to wear masks during games for their safety. Reaching the 1,000-point honor in Molina’s senior year with all the events going on in the world is hard, Molina said, but she is happy about how the ways things are going.

“It isn’t the ideal senior year, but I’m going to make the best of it,” Molina said. “It’s all mental.”

Molina was also named the Rio Sports Live Player of the Game numerous times this past week, most recently scoring 26 points in the Lady Sabercats’ win over Edinburg North Saturday 77-42.
